Meet the Supplier - Goatsbridge Trout Farm

Here at Atlantis of Kilmore Quay we have worked hard to build our reputation for delivering quality fresh fish and seafood to our customers and our focus continues to be on bringing you the best products. We have spent a lot of time forging partnerships with skippers and producers to ensure a constant supply of the freshest Irish products for our customers. This week we are focusing on our supplier Goatsbridge Trout Farm in Thomastown, Co Kilkenny who we have been working with for over 20 years.

Trout is a passion at Goatsbridge Trout Farm where their knowledge has been passed down through 3 generations. The farm is run today by husband and wife team Mag and Ger Kirwan who live and work with their family on the farm. Every catch comes in daily from the crystal clear waters of the Little Arrigle River that flow through their farm, this gives the trout a unique taste and texture.

The story of Goatsbridge begins over 800 years ago when the Monks of Jerpoint Abbey fished in the fast flowing waters of the Little Arrigle river in the heart of The Nore Valley. In 1961 the river gave life to the creation of the first fish ponds, and running through the lands it now forms the heart of one of Irelands best known trout farms. In 1990 the second generation of the family continued to develop the farm and in 2010 a state of the art processing and packaging facility was added to further ensure the quality of the trout produced.

Quality and sustainability are a vital part of the philosophy at Atlantis of Kilmore Quay and it’s a philosophy that’s mirrored at Goatsbridge Trout Farm. They work actively to achieve the Global Gap Aquculture-standard. Global Gap certified fish is produced according to a set of strict rules. Goatsbridge are a member of origin Green & their processing facility is BRC certified.

Trout is an oily fish due to the beneficial omega 3 fats it contains. When we eat oily fish, such as trout, salmon or mackerel, the fish have done the conversion for us so the beneficial oils are more readily available to the body. The omega 3 fats also have anti-inflammatory effects so are useful in inflammatory disorders such as arthritis. Trout is a good source of minerals including selenium and iron. Selenium is needed for thyroid function, fertility, removal of heavy metals and immune function. Iron is needed for energy production and hair and nail health to name a few of its functions. Trout is also a good source of vitamin B12, a vitamin that is poorly absorbed from supplements. B12 is needed for energy, muscle development, bone health, brain function, digestion, and the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Trout also contains niacin (vitamin B3) which is particularly important for nervous system function and brain health.

Goatsbridge produce an award-winning range of ready to enjoy, sustainably farmed Rainbow Trout products – they love trout, and they know you will too.
