Winning Origin Green Gold Membership

Origin Green is the worlds' only national food and drink sustainability programme, enabling the industry to set and achieve measurable sustainability targets that respect the environment and serve local communities more effectively. 2020 was the first year Origin Green awarded Gold Membership and in 2021 Atlantis of Kilmore Quay managed to achieve Gold for the first time. Gold Membership recognises members who are performing at the highest level or excelling in their sustainability performance.

Origin Green is Ireland’s pioneering food and drink sustainability programme, operating on a national scale, uniting government, the private sector and the full supply chain from farmers to food producers and right through to the foodservice and retail sectors. The programme is the worlds’ only national food and drink sustainability programme and enables the industry to set and achieve measurable sustainability targets that respect the environment and serve local communities more effectively.

Origin Green collaborates with over 55,000 farms and 324 leading Irish food and drink companies to prove and improve the sustainability of the food they produce to meet the evolving needs of global customers and consumers. Verified Origin Green members account for 90% of our food and drink exports and over 70% of the retail market. Becoming an Origin Green member means that your organisation will have the tools to produce food and drink in a sustainable manner now and into the future.

At Atlantis of Kilmore Quay we believe in sourcing seafood from fishermen who we know, trust and who operate to world-class standards, this means we always know exactly where each fish comes from. Throughout 2020, we demonstrated an exemplary performance within the areas of supplier certification and packaging.

Within the supplier certification target area, we actively participate in the Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) ran Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs). FIPs are schemes designed to improve the sustainability of fisheries. These involve all those that participate in the catching and sale of fish, working together to improve the level of the fish stock, the environmental impact and the management of a particular fishery.

We have also committed to reducing the amount of packing we use & consume.

In 2020 our aim was to use 74% reusable or recyclable packing but we managed to hit 79% and next year we aim to further reduce our packing used in retail products by switching to a paper-based tray which uses a massive 75% less packing than the plastic equivalent.

Further Improvements have been achieved by:

New low-roof vans for improved fuel efficiency & lower emissions

Yearly reduction in waste going to landfill and increased recycling

Installation of a 10,000L rainwater harvesting tank used for washing down yard

The benefits of Origin Green are more environmentally aware farms, an important focus on community and more sustainable food and drink production which ultimately contribute to sustainable livelihoods. This is what makes Ireland’s food and drink produce the first choice globally; it is trusted as sustainably produced by people who care.
